One of the most common questions we hear is: can a projector replace a TV?

The answer is increasingly yes. In recent years, more people have been using projectors as their main TV, particularly as traditional televisions become limiting in terms of screen size, installation and flexibility.

With the right projector, screen and streaming setup, you can watch Freeview channels, streaming services, movies, sports, YouTube and overseas programs on a screen measuring 100", 150" or even larger.

Why More People Are Switching from TV to Projector

Standard TVs in the 55" to 65" range may no longer provide the level of immersion some viewers are looking for. While larger TVs such as 85" models are available, they also come with practical challenges. They can weigh up to around 40kg, are difficult to transport and usually require at least two people to install safely. Even a relatively small impact can permanently damage the panel.

How Do You Watch TV Through a Projector?

There are two main ways to watch television through a projector:

2. Through a traditional TV antenna using an external TV tuner.

Is There Freeview on a Projector?

Yes, Freeview content can be watched through a projector, although the way you access it is slightly different from using a traditional television.

In Australia, the major television networks have made much of their content available online. Networks including 7, Nine, 10, SBS and ABC offer their own apps for accessing programs and, in many cases, live TV.

Many home projectors include their own branded wireless or smart TV stick that allows users to download apps and access services directly through the projector. If your projector does not include a smart platform or wireless stick, you can connect a third-party streaming device such as Google TV Streamer 4K, Fire TV Stick or Apple TV.

1. Watch Freeview Through Apps

Most major Australian TV networks, including 7, Nine, 10, SBS and ABC, provide apps that can be accessed through compatible smart TV platforms and streaming devices.

These apps can be installed on the projector's compatible wireless stick or smart platform, or accessed by connecting an Apple TV, Fire TV Stick, Google TV Streamer 4K or another compatible media player to the projector.

You can then use the device's remote control to browse available programs and choose what you want to watch. Many programs are available as pre-recorded, on-demand content, while major networks also offer live streaming for selected channels.

2. Watch TV Through a Traditional TV Antenna

This requires an external TV tuner or compatible media player. The antenna cable connects to the coaxial input on the TV tuner, while an HDMI cable connects the HDMI output of the tuner to the HDMI input on the projector.

A projector can also be used for music content. You can stream playlists, concerts or music videos from your favourite musicians and display them on a large projected screen for personal viewing.

Some home projectors also include higher-quality built-in speaker systems from audio brands such as Harman Kardon, Yamaha or Bose, allowing them to operate as a more complete entertainment system without requiring external speakers for casual viewing.

Can You Watch Overseas TV Programs on a Projector?

Yes. In addition to Australian Freeview channels and SBS, you can access television dramas, news and other programs from overseas, including content from Europe, the Middle East, America and Asia.

If you are using one of the smart media players mentioned above, YouTube is another convenient way to access overseas television programs and news.

Some overseas broadcasters upload programs online after they have aired in their home country, while others provide live streams that allow viewers to watch selected content as it is broadcast.

Depending on the broadcaster and program, this means you may be able to access overseas content without paying for an additional subscription.
