One of the most common questions we hear is: can a projector replace a TV?
The answer is increasingly yes. In recent years, more customers are moving towards using a projector as their main “TV”, especially as traditional televisions start to feel limiting in size and flexibility.
Why More People Are Switching from TV to Projector
Standard TVs in the 55" to 65" range are often no longer immersive enough for modern viewing. While larger TVs such as 85" models are available, they come with practical challenges - they are bulky (often up to 40kg), difficult to transport, and require at least two people to install safely. Even a small impact can damage the panel permanently.
A projector offers a far more flexible and scalable solution. Instead of being fixed to one size, you can easily enjoy a 100", 150", or even larger screen without the weight and fragility of a large TV.
When paired with an ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screen, a projector setup can closely replicate - and in many cases exceed - the viewing experience of a traditional TV. The larger screen size allows you to see more detail and creates a more immersive, cinema-like experience at home.
Ultra Short Throw Projector - The True “TV Replacement”
Ultra short throw (UST) projectors are designed specifically to replace TVs. They sit just a short distance from the wall or screen, making them ideal for living rooms and everyday viewing.
Most home-focused UST projectors offer around 3000 to 4000 lumens, which is optimised for watching TV shows, movies, and sports in typical home lighting conditions.
Many models also support smart streaming via built-in systems or external wireless dongles, allowing you to easily access popular TV Channels and platforms such as ABC, Channel 7, Channel Nine, Channel 10, SBS, Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and Kayo Sports.
What About 5000 Lumens Ultra Short Projectors?
Ultra Short Throw Projectors with 5000 lumens or higher are generally designed for commercial environments such as offices, classrooms, and conference rooms. These models prioritise brightness for presentations rather than home entertainment image quality.
For TV replacement at home, a properly designed home theatre or UST projector will usually deliver a better overall viewing experience.
Is a Projector Right for You?
If you want a bigger screen, more flexibility, and a true cinematic experience at home, a TV projector setup is an excellent choice. With the right projector and screen combination, you can enjoy everyday viewing on a scale that traditional TVs simply cannot match.
