How to Choose a Projector

There are hundreds of projector models available on the market, and choosing between them can become confusing.

The right projector depends on where it will be used, how large the image needs to be, how much light is in the room, and what type of content you will be displaying.

Price and brand are important, but they are only part of the picture.

What should you look for when choosing a projector?

When comparing projectors, these are some of the main specifications and features worth looking at:

• Brightness (Lumens / ANSI Lumens): Brightness affects how well the projected image can cope with light in the room. A brighter projector is generally more suitable for offices, classrooms, places of worship, and other spaces where the projector is mainly used during the daytime and there is ambient light coming in from outside. Besides getting the brightest projector, reducing the light inside the room, e.g. by closing the curtains and making sure there are no spotlights shining on the screen, will dramatically improve the image on the screen. Controlling the lighting environment is much better and more ideal than trying to buy the most expensive projector and using it to fight ambient light.
• Native Resolution: Resolution affects how much detail the projector can display. Higher resolutions are particularly useful for larger screens. The larger the screen, e.g. 200", the more visible the individual pixels can become. Higher resolution is also useful if you want to see more detail in presentations, e.g. very large spreadsheet files, movies, and other content where image clarity is important and you want to be able to see all the details.
• Throw Ratio: Throw ratio tells you how large an image a projector can produce from a certain distance. This is one of the most important specifications to check before installation, especially where mounting positions are limited. Projectors usually come with a fixed lens, but some large-venue projectors come with separate optional lenses, allowing you to choose whichever lens suits your environment.
• Projector Type and Size: Some projectors, e.g. large-venue projectors, are designed for permanent ceiling installation, while others are compact and portable. Short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors are also available for rooms where there is limited distance between the projector and screen.
• Light Source: Projectors may use a traditional lamp, LED, or laser light source. Laser projectors have become increasingly common because of their long operating life, consistent brightness, and lower maintenance requirements. However, lamp-based projectors also have their own use if you have a tight budget, as lamp-based projectors are usually at least 20 to 30% cheaper.
• Intended Use: A projector designed for home theatre may have very different priorities from one designed for a meeting room, classroom, church, large venue, or commercial installation.
• Warranty and Support: Warranty length is worth checking, but local support is just as important. Access to authorised Australian service centres, replacement parts, and manufacturer support can make a major difference over the life of the projector. Over the last few years, there have been a lot of new brands that have seemingly popped up out of nowhere and suddenly become very popular through flashy marketing and advertisements on social media. However, their warranty support may still require you to ship the projector overseas for repair. So, think about the freight cost of shipping overseas before you buy from those companies.

Context and application should always be considered together. For example, choosing the brightest projector available does not automatically mean it will give you the best image for your application.

A home theatre in a dark room may benefit more from a dimmer projector that can produce better contrast, colour reproduction, and image quality, while a projector used in a bright meeting room may need higher brightness to keep presentations clearly visible.

Start with how the projector will be used

Before comparing individual models, it is usually easier to start with the application.

A projector for watching movies at home has different requirements from a projector being installed in a classroom or conference room.

For business and education environments, brightness, reliability, connectivity, and warranty are often the main priorities.

For home theatre, contrast, colour accuracy, and resolution may be more important.

For larger venues, churches, and commercial installations, factors such as high brightness, lens options, and installation flexibility become much more important.

Once the application is clear, it becomes much easier to narrow down suitable models.
